5th Grade

The Fifth Grade Lesson Plan Book is filled with lesson after lesson in caring for others. We are a part of "O Ambassadors," an affiliate of Oprah’s Angel Network and Free the Children. Through this program, we learn about the needs of children in East Asia and conduct Bake Sales to raise funds for their school supplies.

Our Oak Creek community of firefighters and police officers receive monthly letters of support and prayers from our class. The 128th Air Refueling Wing, the Zablocki Medical Center for our U.S. Veterans, and many U.S. Armed Forces groups overseas receive our prayers, letters, and cards of support every month.

For 22 years, we have continued to take part in the "Intergenerational Program" with South Milwaukee’s Franciscan Villa Care Center. We meet with our matched-up residents to play bingo, do wheelchair exercises, make snow sculptures, carve pumpkins, square dance, have prayer services, and enjoy picnics together.

We have a group project named "Warm Our Hearts," whereby we make scarves for the homeless, abused, and those in need at the Salvation Army, Casa Maria, and Sojourner Truth House. Fifth Graders "cater" to the entire St. Matthew School community by serving in the Hot Lunch Program every day. We, also, are the Cadets who lead the dismissal of the K4, K5, and Grades 1-2-3-4-5 students at the end of each day for Extended Care, the Walkers and Riders group, and all eight bus routes.

Our Literature class includes: The Whipping Boy, No Flying in the House, Maniac Magee, Homer Price, How to Eat Fried Worms, and Harry Potter. In Math, we include in our lessons multiplication, division, fractions, geometry, and the use of calculators. U.S. History in Social Studies covers the time from the explorers to present-day times. In Language Arts, we learn how to do Research Reports using different sources of references: encyclopedias, library books, magazines, and the Internet. Areas that are covered in Science include classifying organisms, cells, the human body systems, plants, ecosystems, weather patterns, the Earth, properties of matter, and forces in motion. Religion lessons include the Seven Sacraments, using the Bible, and a Respect Life series. Our daily Journals help us organize our thoughts and be creative!
